Upgradation

G.Y. 24 (T.Y. 2249)

In March 2249, Allied scientists developed the powerful Harpoon Advanced Missile System (AMS), which used the energy created by a concentrated proton particle barrage to wreak devastation on any surface it encountered.

Spotting an opportunity, Polaron Initiatives & Orion Industries submitted 2 new designs - upgraded versions of the Archer & Avenger, called the Longbow & Nova respectively. These new ships would be similar to their earlier designs, excepting that they would be armed with the new Harpoon AMS, thereby significantly upgrading their firepower. The Longbow would also have a slightly longer range than the Archer and in the case of the Nova; the Impulse Drive Mark III would be located between the large tail fins to provided added protection from enemy fire.

In what would amount to an extremely ambitious and previously unheard of initiative, Alliance Command managed to convince the government to divert massive amounts of funds to upgrade all existing Archers & Avengers to these new designs. This led to a lot of economic hardship for a few months and other production and research virtually almost came to a standstill. But the gamble paid off and by the end of 4 weeks all ships had been upgraded, thereby seriously multiplying the combat power of Starfleet’s combat fleets.

By end 2249, the Alliance Starfleet had 72 warships (39 Longbows & 33 Novas) and 16 Troopships, a far cry from its almost defenseless state a few years ago. The Alliance Star Navy was however still quite weak as compared to the navies of all the other major races, whether qualitatively or quantitatively. While the Torians had more than twice as many ships, the Arceans had almost two and a half times as many planets and far superior technology. Even the mysterious Altairians had far more and better quality ships than the Alliance. As for the Yor Collective and Drengin Empire, the Terran Alliance had almost the same number of warships as either of them, but their ships were far superior and powerful and could theoretically take on atleast two Alliance ships each. The Yor had more planets and both the races were fierce warriors who fought with mindless determination and had no concept of mercy. And in addition, the Alliance had to divide its forces amongst its many neighbours, while the Yor had only 2 borders to guard.

All in all, the Alliance was militarily in a far better situation than it had been at any time since humanity had spread to the stars, and its production was geared towards producing as many warships and troop ships as possible. As time passed, the glaring disparity of military power between the Alliance and its neighbours was steadily reducing, and the speedy upgradation of the Alliance’s factories to a more advanced, fully automated design, received as part of a technology exchange with the Arceans, proved invaluable in hiking production levels significantly.

Alliance Command also designed a new warship – the Guardian. Based on a tiny hull, this ship had only a single Impulse Drive II, no Support Modules and was armed with 2 Laser IV cannons. Several of these were built and were sent to various frontier planets of strategic value. Starfleet knew that they wouldn’t stand a chance against a real warship, but that wasn’t their mission – their mission was to prevent any surprise attack by fast enemy transports, before the nearby fleets could respond.

But things still looked grim. Peace reigned in the galaxy, but the war clouds were gathering.
